Today I’m here to share the steps to schedule a backup of your accounts in WHM which is highly recommended for VPS (Virtual Private Server) and Dedicated Server

Importance of Scheduling Backup:

  • Taking a periodical backup which is necessity to avoid web content loss due to hacking / Account infection with Malware / virus
  • Also maintaining the multiple backups which will ensures the account restoration with minimal time at the time website down
  • By enabling auto-backup, server will automatically takes the backup and it will maintain the number of backups based on the backup configuration

Types of Backup Configuration :

By default WHM will comes with two kind of backup configuration which is an Backup configuration and another one will known as legacy backup configuration

Recently Backup configuration had comes with improved features and bug fixes, On other hand legacy backup is contains classic features of the WHM

Steps to enable backup configuration :

Let see how to enable auto-backup in WHM panel

  1. Legacy Backup Configuration:

Step 1:

Log on your WHM panel with ROOT user :

Tip : Here you can refer the commonly used port numbers

Step 2:

In search box enter the term as “Legacy” which will shows the option called Legacy Backup Configuration

Click that option to start the configuration

Step 3:

1.Backup Status – Select the Enabled option to start further configuration

Once enabled we can start further settings

2.Backup Interval – Here you can choose when backup should run

You can see three option which will be Daily, weekly and Monthly

Choose the backup interval based on your requirement

3.Backup Retention

Here you can set how long backup file needs to be retended in the server

4. Days to Run Backup

You have to choose the day when your backup needs to be run, Its mandatory for both weekly and monthly scedules

5.Remount/Unmount Backup Drive

This option will helps you to take backups in the backup drive which will requires separate drive or mount point

If you have you can enable this option or else you can leave this option as disabled

6. Below options must be enabled

  • Backup Accounts
  • Compress Account Backups
  • Backup Configuration Files

7. Backup Type

Choose the Backup Type as Standard which is an advisable one, If you have Remote FTP then you can choose that option too

8. Remote FTP configuration

Here you have to input the information of your Remote FTP credentials

9.Backup Destination

Here you need to enter the backup path which will be normally as /backup

That’s path will contains the backup files, you can access that path via SSH to fetch information about the backup files

10. Select Specific Users

Finally here you can choose the users you wish to enable / disable auto-backup

Based on user selection auto-backup will take the backup of those accounts on regular interval

Things needs to remembered :

  • Upon configuring auto-backup maintain the amount of free space to avoid interruption at the time backup process running
  • Maintain multiple dated backups for enhanced data protection
  • Keep copy of backups
